Pico de Orizaba or Citlaltéptl in Nahuatl (indigenous language) means "Star Mountain".

This trip offers an enjoyable progressive approach to a high altitude climb. The first day hikes and camping at higher elevation provides a natural and excellent acclimatization opportunity. The secluded trails go through pine forest with very close range views of the glaciers..

Iztaccihuatl or "White Woman" in Nahuatl (indigenous language), is the third highest (5260m) volcano in Mexico.
You can choose the best option for mountain climbing Iztaccihuatl according to your needs:

  • Or only transport to the trailhead and back

This volcano (4430m) has a high altitude pine and oak dense forest. Close to the summit, there is a sharp ridge with views of both valleys, Puebla and Tlaxcala.
On a clear day, it is possible to see the higher Mexican mountains, like Popocatepetl, Iztaccihuatl and Pico de Orizaba (Citlaltépetl).

Itinerary

Description:

The route goes through a beautiful pine and oak forest, with different "music from the birds". As we approach the summit, we will find deep and interesting ravines on the last ridge of the hike.

Note: You can add a second higher summit (Citlaltépetl) to your journey. Please ask for Malinche and Orizaba Climb. Malinche is a good acclimatization ascent previous to an attempt of a higher volcano.

A short day hike through the forest, to breathe the fresh air of the mountain in the state of Toluca, Mexico.

This volcano of 4690 m., is the fourth highest in Mexico; also known as Chicnautécatl in Nahulatl (indigenous language), meaning "Nine Hills". Inside the crater, there are two awesome clear water lakes; "La Laguna del Sol y La Luna". Probably the highest lakes found in North America. Several routes are available, but the standard route goes over the crater rim towards the highest point, "El Pico del Fraile". Excellent adventure trip option for short time frame visits close to Mexico City.

Basic Technical Skills for Climbing in the Mexican Volcanoes

To climb over steep glaciers, it is essential to have proper training and knowledge before attempting to climb Pico de Orizaba.
The climbing techniques, among others include the adequate use of ice axe, crampons, rope, self and team arrest, as well as basic knowledge of AMS (acute mountain sickness).
Servimont has available a glacial traverse seminar so you can learn on a short time these techniques or refresh your skills for climbing. An excellent option that will detail step by step on how to climb Pico de Orizaba, with the highest glacier in Mexico.

Physical Fitness

These high altitude volcanoes are very physically demanding. It is recommended to have a good to very good physical fitness level. The climb usually takes on average, 10 -14 hrs. Carrying a medium weight backpack.

Acclimatization

It is important to have previous and progressive acclimatization at lower elevations before going to the hut or attempting the summit.
